EBS Technology Codelevel Checker (ETCC)

Before an Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 upgrade or AD/TXK delta, the EBS Technology Codelevel Checker (ETCC) must report zero missing patches on the application tier. Applying those one-offs by hand means separate OPatch sessions on the Forms, Web Tier and Oracle Common homes, plus BSU for WebLogic.

The EBS Technology Patch Automation Tool for the Application Tier (ETPAT-AT), Patch 32208510, does all of it in one run. This post walks through a real run that applied 41 patches in 60 minutes and finished with a clean ETCC report. Long outputs are trimmed; trimmed parts are marked ....

2. Patches to download

Download all of these from My Oracle Support before you start. The tool asks for the last four only after its pre-checks, so staging them early avoids a pause in the middle of the run.

Before you beginShut down all application tier services, including AdminServer and NodeManager. Take a backup of the RUN file system (at least FMW_Home and EBSapps/10.1.2). Run the session inside screen or tmux so a dropped SSH connection can’t interrupt OPatch.

3. Prepare the stage area

3.1Create the stage directory and upload the zips

[applmgr@erpapp01 ~]$ mkdir -p /soft/patches/ETPAT-AT
[applmgr@erpapp01 ETPAT-AT]$ ls -lhtr
total 156K
-rw-r--r-- 1 applmgr oinstall 44K Oct 15 21:43 p32208510_R12_GENERIC.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 applmgr oinstall 110K Oct 15 21:43 p17537119_R12_GENERIC.zip

3.2Unzip the ETPAT-AT tool

Unzip only the tool. ETPAT-AT unpacks ETCC and the other patches itself.

[applmgr@erpapp01 ETPAT-AT]$ unzip -o p32208510_R12_GENERIC.zip
Archive: p32208510_R12_GENERIC.zip

4. Run ETPAT-AT

4.1Start the script and give the context file

Enter the full path of the RUN edition context XML file. A directory path fails with ETPAT-ERR-001, as the first attempt below shows.

9. Best practices

  • Download the latest ETCC (17537119) on the day of the run. Its mapping files change often.
  • Stage all six patches before starting, so the run never stops waiting for a download.
  • Choose the PSU marked Recommended to avoid another WebLogic patch cycle soon after.
  • Run inside screen or tmux and log the session.
  • Rehearse on a clone of production first. You’ll know the timing and any conflicts in advance.
  • Keep the timestamped OPatch_* folders and bsu.sh_* backup until the upgrade is signed off.
